This camp is intended for prospective SOTA Applicants in the DRAWING & PAINTING and ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN departments. It’s VERY important that students have some kind of drawing experience if they are considering applying. The goal of this camp is to give students an idea of what the audition assignment process is like, start/practice SOTA portfolio projects, and decide whether the D+P and A+D programs are the right fit for them.

DAY 1:
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Overview of SOTA application requirements for the different visual arts departments, show examples of accepted student artworks, emphasize the rigor of the curriculum.

Begin Still Life Project in Pencil. Emphasis on sketching technique, take notes from Academic Drawing for adults.
12:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Emphasis on fundamentals of shading. Finish Still Life Project
DAY 2:
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Morning: Overview of facial anatomy and how to get a likeness. Begin Self Portrait drawing.
12:30 AM - 3:30 PM: Tips on shading the face. Finish self portrait.
DAY 3:
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Overview of linear perspective. Doing several 1 point perspective sketches.
12:30 AM - 3:30 PM: Picking a favorite sketch, drawing it in more detail.
DAY 4:
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Hand lettering and font design basics. Beginning brainstorm sketching for hand lettering project.
12:30 AM - 3:30 PM: Picking 3 favorites and finishing them neatly.
DAY 5:
9:The final day is dedicated to the creative project of the student's choice. Explain criteria for creative projects, how to stand out and think outside the box, give prompt ideas and explore unusual/unique materials. The whole group works on their creative project from start to finish all day.
Live drawing audition practice can also be done.
Refund policy:
We are not offering refunds for new purchases. However, full credit towards future bookings or transfer to another camp/class will be offered for any cancellations made up to 24 hrs before the camp or class start.
Frequently asked questions about our camps
What is the teacher-student ratio? The teacher-student ratio is 6 to 1 in the camps for 6-10 year olds, and 7 to 1 in camps for 10-18 year olds. What do students do during art camp? Students explore a variety of creative projects such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed-media work. Camps focus on building art fundamentals while encouraging creativity and experimentation. My child is 1 year younger than the camp age listed. Can she participate in the camp? In some cases, students who are one year younger than the listed age range may attend if they are especially interested in art and able to comfortably participate in the activities. Please contact us to discuss whether the camp would be a good fit. Do you provide before and after class/camp care? At this time, we do not provide extended care before or after camps. Due to limited space, students should arrive and be picked up according to the camp schedule. Do students need previous art experience? No prior experience is required. Our camps are designed for both beginners and students with some art background, and instructors guide students step by step through each project. Where are your art camps located? Our art camps take place at our Bay Area studios in San Francisco, San Jose, Mountain View, San Rafael, and Walnut Creek. Each location offers small-group instruction and a supportive studio environment. Do you provide extended care? No, we do not provide extended care.
