Grade 7

Modernism: The Freedom of Form

  1. Maurits Cornelis Escher, his pencil studies and puzzles. Understanding the basic principles of sketching and shading. Creating a unique puzzle or drawing a small object from nature. Pencil on paper.

  2. Cubism and Fauvism (Picasso, Braque, Matisse, German Expressionists). Exaggerations of colors and shapes.

  3. Wassily Kandinsky and his invention of Abstract Art. Understanding the basics of two-dimensional composition, learning to achieve the balance of colors and shapes. Creating an abstract art piece. Collage on paper.

  4. The Bauhaus and principles of contemporary design. Designing an object that will exist in the future. Material of a choice.

  5. Georgia O’Keeffe and American Modernism. A journey from abstract art to symbolic realism. Painting a portrait of a flower. Learning to assess the desired colors by mixing, and transforming miniature details into a monumental art piece. Pencils and markers on large cardboard.

  6. Tamara De Lempicka and Art Deco. Making a poster in Art Deco style. Acrylic paint.

  7. Dali and Magritte: surrealism. Making a unique composition in surrealistic style. Acrylic paint.

  8. Readymades and Duchamp.  Making an art piece from recycled materials.
